BEHIND THE SHOW

The Kingdom of Dreams, A Tale of Oz is an original play based on an obscure, one-time reference to a “Kingdom of Dreams” in L. Frank Baum’s 1914 book, Tik Tok of Oz. For its format, the play leans not on the 1900 book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, or on the 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz, seen by approximately one billion people, but on the original 1903 Broadway extravaganza. Circa 1900, an extravaganza was a technical term (to distinguish it from burlesque, vaudeville, etc.) for a play with original music and dances, stunning special effects, and lavish sets and costumes built around a fairy tale. This new two-act play by playwright Kenny Chumbley, has six original songs, original choreography, special effects (one of which has been rarely seen in over a hundred years), stunning sets and costumes, and a fairy tale that pays tribute to Frank Baum, the author of the classic American fairy tale, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
